What Makes You Happy (6) – When It’s Not About You

Welcome to CROLCC, we are so glad you are here worshiping with us. Are you ready for the month of September? Today marks the end of August and also the end of our series What Makes You Happy. If you were with us I am pretty sure you know the answer by now – no thing. Happiness is about an outcome, it’s a result that you and I need to sow for it in order to get there. Therefore if you are unhappy today, it’s because you have sowed your way to your unhappiness. The good news is you can begin today to sow towards the direction of happiness.

So far in this series we have talked about things you can do for yourself to be happy. In other words, sowing for yourself and reaping for yourself. But as we close this series, we want to talk about something counterintuitive to all of us. That if it’s all about you, eventually you still won’t be happy. And if you truly want to be happy, it must be more than you, you must learn to give yourself away.

Moving Forward

You were made for more than you. It’s not intuitive, but it’s true. You can’t acquire, consume, or exercise your way to happiness. But you may be able to serve and volunteer your way there. If you live as if it’s all about you, you will never be happy.

Changing Your Mind

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Galatians 5:22–23

Discussion Questions
1. Talk about a time when acting selflessly made you happier. Why do you think you felt happy?

2. Read Galatians 5:19–21. In what ways are you tempted to find happiness at the expense of others? How do you avoid acting on those temptations?

3. Read Galatians 5:22–23. As you look at that list of behaviors, is it difficult for you to believe they lead to happiness? Why or why not?

4. Is there a way you need to serve others or a place you need to volunteer? If so, what is one step you can take this week toward serving or volunteering? How can this group support you?
